I want to share a bit about myself.
I grew up in Detroit, Michigan. enjoying a diverse background of experiences and cultures. I loved the cultural diversities that I had the privilege to experience. I witnessed how different cultures ate and approached their cultural rituals. I learned that rituals are very important for connection in our cultures and groups. It offers a gift of understanding and connection with one another.
It is also true that I witnessed the harsh biases that get constructed out of fear.
As hurtful as this is it sparked deep contemplation in me of what this meant as human beings. It helped me to question things and not accept all the fear based erroneous beliefs that are passed onto us. These fears, of course, are evident in our external world in how we all relate to each other, but they also extend internally in how we struggle with fear-motivated patterns within ourselves.
Other significant experiences that I had growing up was the experience of going through the civil rights movement. That was a huge part of my questioning of how I wanted to conduct myself as a human being. Through these experiences I somehow knew that my interest was being able to help others. I look back and now know it was my calling. At the time, I was not sure of any of it. I just knew the direction was right for me.
After I graduated from High School, I was interested in art.
I attended a community college in Flint, Michigan and entered the fine arts program. There I took a class in Art Therapy. The class had experiential components in it. Even though I loved the art program as a whole, the Art Therapy class really piqued my interest. It sparked the fire within, starting me on the path of becoming a therapist. My creativity opened up. I now have an appreciation of how creative self-expression is needed in all of us. I then completed my education in both clinical community psychology as an undergrad student and clinical social work in a Master’s degree program. During the time I was working on completing college and working toward being a clinician, I was married and had my son.
Today, when I am not working, I love being outdoors.
Whenever I can I love to go hiking and canoeing. Nature grounds me. Gardening is also a great pleasure for me. It’s my personal therapy. I not only love making beautiful flower beds, but vegetable gardening and preserving the fresh food is a delight. The art of food and healthy cooking is exciting with all the different tastes that brings your senses alive with pleasure.
Whenever I can, I love to get lost in creating mosaic art and any other creative things that surface for me. It is rejuvenating to have a place to express yourself through creative ideas whether you are good at it or not.
